N1,500 Fuel Price: Nigerians Don Blast Gov Okpebholo Over UK Comparison
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, don come under heavy criticism after e tell Nigerians say dem suppose dey grateful say petrol still dey sell for between N1,400 and N1,500 per litre, instead of complaining about the high price.
The governor make the statement while speaking for “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event. According to am, e recently visit London and discover say petrol for UK dey cost more than N3,000 per litre after converting the price to naira. He use the comparison to argue say Nigerians no suppose complain too much about the current fuel price.
Okpebholo also defend the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu, describing the reforms as difficult but necessary to stabilise the economy. But Nigerians no gree with the governor. Many people for social media questioned why he compare petrol prices without also comparing minimum wage, salaries, purchasing power and cost of living between Nigeria and the UK.
The Allied Peoples Movement, APM, also condemn the governor’s comment and demand his resignation. The party argue say while the average Nigerian worker dey struggle with about N70,000 minimum wage, workers for the UK earn millions of naira when their salaries dey converted.
A labour activist, Abayomi Idowu, describe Okpebholo’s statement as insensitive and provocative, saying political leaders should understand the hardship ordinary Nigerians dey face instead of telling them to celebrate high fuel prices.
The controversy don therefore raise another major question: If Nigeria wan compare fuel price with UK, no be salary, minimum wage and standard of living suppose also enter the comparison?
